A country in Central American bordered by Nicaragua and Panama. It came under Spanish rule in the 16th century, after first being inhabited by indigenous peoples. After the Costa Rican Civil War in 1948, it permanently abolished its army in 1949.
There are more than 50 species of hummingbirds in Costa Rica. The Guanacaste was chosen as the national tree. Tamales are served at nearly all celebrations.
